The Birdhouse Contest

The Great Big Birdhouse Competition is open to all entrants who want to participate.
Show off your creativity and win some cash by building, creating, or decorating a birdhouse!

Deadline: Thursday, April 20

The birdhouses will be displayed at The Botanic Garden during the Herb and Succulent Festival April 22. Entries must be received before 5PM Thursday, April 20.

 

Entry Requirements and Judging Criteria:
  1. Birdhouses must be smaller than 12” x 12” x 12”.
  2. Birdhouses must be designed to be used by birds and able to withstand outdoor weather conditions.
  3. Grand Prize and Second Place: Entries will be judged on the following criteria: Utility- useful to birds, Durability- made of sturdy materials and well-built, Aesthetics- artistic merit of the design.
  4. Best Use of Recycled Materials: Entries made from a majority of recycled materials that did not win first prize will be considered for a $50 special prize.
  5. Best Unusual or Abstract Design: The entry that is the most unique, avant-garde, innovative, whimsical, or out-of-the-box (that did not win first prize) will be awarded a $50 special prize.
  6. All entries will be judged together. First place will be awarded a prize of $500 and second place will be awarded $150. Entries that did not win first place are eligible for the $50 special prizes. Recycled material or abstract designs can win first place, these are not separate categories.
  7. You may submit a short caption along with your entry to explain your design or scribe what materials were used (encouraged if using recycled materials).
  8. TBG Staff reserves the right to reject entries deemed inappropriate.
Submitting Your Entry:
  1. Entries can be submitted at the Garden Office at The Botanic Garden (On Google Maps: OSU Horticultural Resource Center; 3425 W. Virginia Ave). You can submit your birdhouse to staff or leave it in the dropbox at the front door.
  2. Please fill out an entry form at The Garden when you submit your entry. (Forms will be in dropbox for you to fill out and attach to your birdhouse).
  3. Entries must be received before 5PM Thursday, April 20.
  4. Entries will be blind judged.
  5. Birdhouses will be displayed during the Herb & Succulent Festival on April 22 from 9AM to 2PM.
  6. Winners will be contacted at 9AM April 22.
  7. You may pick up birdhouses after the festival (after 2pm). Please consider donating your birdhouse to be installed in our gardens!
  8. Birdhouses still at the Garden the morning of Monday, April 24 will be considered donated.
